Ukraine's Coach Oleg Blokhin has announced that AC Milan's striker Andriy Shevchenko's
injury will affect the prospects of his teem in Mondial 2006. In addition to Shevchenko's,
who is now taking a two-week break, the Ukrainean team's defense has been experiencing
a wave of injuries too including defender Serhiy Fyodorov, forward Andriy Vorobei,
and the team's goalkeepers, as Olexander Shovkovsky broke his collarbone in January.
The current plan is to send the team to training camps in Turkey and Switzerland
and stage some friendly games. Defender Fyodorov may be replaced by Dmitri Chigrinsky
from Shakhtar Donetsk. The keeper will be replaced by Andriy Pyatov from Vorskla
Poltava and Bohdan Shust from Shakhtar.
Ukraine's first matches in FIFA World Cup 2006 will be against Spain, Saudi
Arabia and Tunisia. On 28 May the team will play a home match against Costa
Rica, followed by three friendly games in Switzerland: against Italy on 2 June,
Libya on 5 June, and against Luxembourg on 8 June.
