London defeated Moscow, New York, Madrid, and of course its old rival Paris, which
was the favorite in the race. London will host the Olympic Games in 2012. The
2008 games will take place in Beijing.
As always, the politicians stirred the feud: While British Prime Minister Blair
heartily lobbied the Olympic committee, French president Chirac chose to insult
the British cuisine as worse only from the one in Finland, forgetting that 2
members on the committee are Finnish. Well, the final score was 50-54 for London,
so perhaps insulting the home cooking of board members was not a brilliant idea
as it might have seemed.
